Making perception visible

We never normally meet a machine’s perception, only its conclusions: the image, the answer, the output. The interpreting happens somewhere we can’t see. Open Circuit places a body in front of that hidden process and turns it outwards into a dialogue between two unconscious processes: neural network algorithms and corporeal intuition.

Five shifting values

A dancer enters into dialogue with a system that listens, misreads, remembers and responds to their movement. AI translates that movement into five shifting output values: Energy, Chaos, Coherence, Memory and Release. These values return through sound and image as texture, atmosphere and visual memory change: an ambient pressure system the dancer can sense, anticipate and respond to.

Neither human nor machine fully leads. Each response changes what follows. What emerges is a feedback loop between body, sound and image: a shared nervous system, part limb, part circuit. We built the project from scratch over three days at Sónar+D 2026 HackLab, connecting Unreal Engine, Ableton Live and OSC. I usually focus on visuals; here, I took on a more sound-oriented role, learning to think differently through the process of creating together.
